Introduction

Every community is faced with various societal challenges, which can stem from either individual shortcomings or shortcomings in leadership. These issues can take many forms and affect different aspects of society, including economic, political, and social issues. The root causes of these social problems can be complex and multifaceted and may involve a combination of individual, group, and systemic factors. Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from all members of society, as well as effective leadership and a commitment to addressing the underlying causes of these problems.

Social Issues and Problems

Social problems are persistent and recurring issues that are prevalent in society. Some of the most commonly encountered social issues include examination misconduct, involvement in criminal or violent groups (known as cultism), electoral fraud, drug abuse, youth crime, the spread of HIV/AIDS, religious and ethnic conflicts, corruption, prostitution, and kidnapping. These issues can have a significant impact on the individuals affected by them, as well as on society as a whole, and they require a collective effort to address and resolve. Addressing these issues requires a thorough understanding of the root causes, as well as the development and implementation of effective solutions and strategies.

Common social problems in Nigeria are:-

  i. Kidnapping – the act of forcibly taking someone against their will and holding them captive.

ii. Armed robbery – the act of using weapons to steal from someone.

iii. Bribery and corruption – the abuse of power or position for personal gain, often involving the exchange of money or favours.

iv. Academic misconduct – actions that violate the rules and standards of conduct in an educational setting, such as cheating on exams or plagiarizing work.

v. Prostitution – the exchange of sexual services for money or other compensation.

vi. Substance abuse – the overuse or abuse of drugs or alcohol to the point where it causes harm to one’s health or negatively affects their life.

vii. Online fraud – the use of the internet to deceive or manipulate people for financial gain.

viii. Inter-religious and inter-ethnic conflict – disputes and tensions between different religious or ethnic groups.

ix. Lack of collaboration – a failure or inability to work together effectively, often resulting in a lack of progress or cooperation.

x. Election irregularities – any violation of the rules and procedures that are established for the conduct of an election, such as vote tampering, fraud, or abuse of power by those in charge of the election. This can result in the outcome of an election being distorted or manipulated, undermining the integrity and fairness of the electoral process. To ensure free and fair elections, it is important to have strong safeguards in place to prevent and detect electoral malpractice and to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

These are some of the social issues and problems that are prevalent in many communities and societies around the world, and addressing them requires a coordinated effort from all members of society

Contemporary Social Problems in Nigeria

Nigeria is faced with a multitude of societal challenges and issues, many of which are having a significant impact on its citizens. Some of the most prevalent social problems in Nigeria include examination malpractice, the spread of HIV/AIDS, sexual assault, abduction, armed robbery, various forms of fraud such as the infamous “419” scam, online scams, involvement in criminal or violent groups (known as cultism), child exploitation, prostitution, religious conflict, terrorism, and others. These problems can have serious consequences for individuals, communities, and the country as a whole, and require effective solutions and a unified effort to address and resolve. Addressing these social issues requires a deep understanding of the underlying causes, as well as the development and implementation of effective strategies to mitigate their impact and prevent them from recurring.

Causes of Contemporary Social Problems in Nigeria

The following are some of the causes of the social problems facing the country:

1. Poverty: The increasing rate of poverty in society has become a major concern, as the rich continue to prosper while the poor are facing greater struggles. This has led to a rise in criminal activities, such as armed robbery, prostitution, and other societal issues, as individuals try to make ends meet.
2. Unemployment: Unemployment refers to a scenario in which -bodied individuals in society are unable to find work to provide for themselves. This problem has become so severe that even highly-educated professionals with extensive training cannot find employment opportunities. This has led to frustration and desperation, causing some to resort to criminal activities such as kidnapping.
3. Corruption: Corruption is another significant contributor to social problems in Nigeria. The widespread nature of corruption has created a culture in which many do not see the value in doing things in a lawful and ethical manner. This has resulted in issues such as exam malpractices and internet scams.
4. Lack of Parental Care: A significant number of children in society lack proper upbringing and guidance from their parents. This lack of support can lead to these children becoming societal misfits and making negative life choices. For example, the Almajiri children in northern Nigeria, who are often easy targets for recruitment by terrorist groups such as Boko Haram.
5. Greed and Lack of Contentment: Greed and an excessive desire for wealth are one of the driving factors behind social problems in the country. Society is becoming increasingly filled with individuals who are never satisfied with what they have and always seek to acquire more. This has led to problems such as armed robbery, fraud, prostitution, and child trafficking.
6. Influence of Popular Culture: The impact of Western culture, particularly American culture, has led to social problems in Nigeria. The widespread availability of films, musical videos, and the internet has resulted in indiscriminate sexual behaviours and an increase in issues such as HIV/AIDS, prostitution, homosexuality, and lesbianism.
