Costume and Makeup

The term costume refers to the actors’ clothing, which may include their shoes, jewellery, and haircuts. The clothes used by the actors and actresses enhance their overall aesthetic beauty. The ability to precisely fit the intended persona is another benefit of costumes. Costumes are made, acquired, and sewn by the costumier or costume designer. The actors on stage dress in a variety of styles and accessorise with jewellery, hats, and shoes.

Different types OF Costume

There are two main kinds of costumes. Below is a list of them.

1. REAL OR AUTHENTIC COSTUME: These are the actual clothing and accessories that performers are expected to don for the main theatrical production.
2. REHEARSAL COSTUME: This phrase refers to the attire and accessories that performers use particularly during play rehearsals.
3. ACCESSORIES AND WEARABLES: They include traditional attire like as hats, dresses, shoes, jewellery, purses, and watches.

Content of Makeup

Makeup refers to cosmetics like lipstick or face powder that is used to modify or enhance one’s appearance. The word “makeup” is used to describe the artificial substances, such as paint and powder, that are applied to a character’s face and body to enhance or change their outward appearance. An actor’s appearance may be improved by makeup or altered so that they resemble someone who is supposed to be imitated and copied.

The two main types of cosmetics are. the following

1. Straight makeup: Performers use this style of makeup only for aesthetic reasons. It is used to increase the appeal of the performers.

2. Character make-up: This is used by actors to alter or change their appearance into that of a different person. For instance, character makeup might change a 25-year-demeanour old into an 80-year-old guy.

How to use Makeup

The following are some of the roles that makeup serves in a theatrical performance.

I. Identification: The use of makeup makes it simpler for the audience to identify and differentiate between the actors.

ii. Beautification: Makeup is used to highlight or draw attention to the beauty of onstage performers.

iii. Change Appearance: Character makeup, in particular, helps an actor adopt a new character’s look. With the right cosmetics, a male can pass for a woman, and vice versa. 

Makeup Tools

Some of the often used cosmetics include colours, powder, wigs, eye pencils, lipstick, camwood, native chalk, cotton wool, brushes, gum, and spirit.

THE USE OF MAKEUP

1. It makes one’s face seem better.

2. It alters one’s facial appearance.

3. It has distinctive characters, like ghosts.

4. It depicts or serves as an example of the role the actor or actress is portraying.
